Pressure Chart

Hammer Union Figures & Pressure Ratings

The figure number of a hammer union shows its pressure class. Always match the figure number on both halves – unions of different figures must never be connected.

FigureTypical cold working pressureCommon use
Figure 1001,000 psiLow-pressure water, air and fluid transfer lines
Figure 2002,000 psiMud, water and low-pressure oilfield lines
Figure 4004,000 psiMedium-pressure service and production lines
Figure 6026,000 psiMud, cementing and medium-pressure manifold lines
Figure 100210,000 psiHigh-pressure well service and test lines
Figure 150215,000 psiFrac iron, flowback, cementing and high-pressure manifolds
Figure 200220,000 psiVery high-pressure frac and well service

Ratings shown are typical industry values for each figure. Confirm the rating stamped on the union and on your equipment before use. Figure 300 and other figures available on request.

How It Works

What Is a Hammer Union?

A hammer union is a quick-connect fitting that joins two sections of pipe or flowline without welding. It has three parts: a male sub, a female sub and a wing nut. The nut is tightened with a sledgehammer on its lugs, which pulls the two subs together and seals the joint.

Because they connect and disconnect in minutes, hammer unions are the standard connection on temporary high-pressure lines – 1502 plug valves, pup joints, swivel joints, tees and crosses all use them.

Male vs Female

Male and Female Hammer Unions

  • Male half – the sub that carries the wing nut
  • Female half – the threaded sub the nut screws onto
  • Seal – an elastomer seal ring in the female sub seals the joint under pressure
  • MxF, FxF, MxM – describe which halves are on each end of a pup joint, valve or fitting

Sizes

Popular Hammer Union Sizes

2"Most common

The standard size for frac iron, flowback, cementing and well testing lines.

3"Higher flow

Used on frac and flowback spreads that need higher flow rates.

4"Large bore

For high-rate flowback, production test and manifold lines.

1" to 4" sizes available. Other sizes on request.

Safety

Hammer Union Safety Tips

  • Never mix figures – some unions of different figures look alike and can partly connect, then fail under pressure. Check the figure number on both halves.
  • Check the seal – replace worn or damaged seal rings before make-up.
  • Inspect threads and lugs – do not use unions with cracked nuts, worn threads or damaged lugs.
  • Use the right service – choose sour service (H2S) unions for sour wells.
  • Never strike under pressure – only tighten or loosen a union when the line is depressurised.

FAQ

Hammer Union Questions

Figures, pressure ratings, sizes and safe use.

01What is a hammer union used for?

A hammer union quickly connects two sections of pipe or flowline without welding. It is used on frac iron, flowback, cementing, well testing and other temporary high-pressure lines.

02What is a 1502 hammer union rated for?

A Figure 1502 hammer union is typically rated for 15,000 psi cold working pressure. It is the most common union on frac and flowback lines.

03What is the difference between a male and female hammer union?

The male half carries the wing nut. The female half has the external thread that the nut screws onto, and usually holds the seal ring.

04Can I connect a Figure 602 union to a Figure 1502 union?

No. Unions of different figures are not designed to work together. Some can partly connect and then fail under pressure, so always match the figure number on both halves.

05What sizes do you supply?

We supply hammer unions in 1" to 4" sizes. The 2" size is the most widely used on frac and flowback lines.

06Do you have sour service hammer unions?

Yes. We supply hammer unions for standard service and for sour (H2S) gas service.
