Slab vs Expanding Gate Valves

Frac Valves for Hydraulic Fracturing

Frac valves are large-bore API 6A gate valves used on frac trees, frac stacks and zipper manifolds. They handle high pressure, abrasive sand and frequent cycling, so they are usually 5-1/8" or 7-1/16" bore at 10,000 or 15,000 psi, with manual or hydraulic operation and greasable bodies for fast field maintenance.

01What sizes and pressure ratings do your API 6A gate valves come in?

Standard bore sizes from 1-13/16" to 7-1/16" with working pressures from 2,000 to 15,000 psi. See the size and pressure chart above for the standard combinations.

02What is the difference between a slab and an expanding gate valve?

A slab gate valve uses one solid gate that line pressure pushes onto the downstream seat. An expanding gate valve uses a two-piece gate that mechanically seals against both seats, giving a tight seal even at low pressure.

03What is a frac valve?

A frac valve is a large-bore, high-pressure API 6A gate valve used on frac trees, frac stacks and manifolds during hydraulic fracturing. Common sizes are 5-1/8" and 7-1/16" at 10,000 or 15,000 psi.

04Which PSL and material class do I need?

It depends on your operator's specification and well conditions. PSL 1–3 set the level of testing and documentation. Material classes AA–CC are for general service, while DD–FF are for sour (H₂S) service. Our team can help you choose.
