How It Works

What Is a Swivel Joint?

A swivel joint is a pipe fitting with one or more ball-bearing swivels that turn 360°. It lets a high-pressure line bend, move and line up with equipment, so you can connect pumps, manifolds and wellheads without forcing the pipe into place.

Swivel joints are often called chiksan or chiksan-style joints. On frac and flowback sites they are joined with hammer unions, 1502 plug valves and pup joints to build flexible temporary flowlines and hose loops.

Benefits

Why Use Swivel Joints

  • Easy alignment – 360° rotation lines up pumps, manifolds and wellheads
  • Less stress and wear – reduces strain on hoses, pipe and connections
  • Absorbs movement – handles vibration and pressure surges on pump lines
  • Fast rig-up – connects in minutes with hammer unions, no welding
  • Full flow – long-radius bends keep a smooth flow path

Sizes

Popular Swivel Joint Sizes

2"Most common

The standard size for frac pump lines, flowback, cementing and well testing.

3"Higher flow

For frac spreads and flowback lines that need higher flow rates.

4"Large bore

For high-rate flowback, production test and manifold connections.

Applications

Where Swivel Joints Are Used

  • Frac pump lines – connecting frac pumps to the missile and manifold
  • Flowback and well testing – flexible temporary test spreads
  • Cementing and acidizing – pump truck discharge lines
  • Hose loops – high-pressure loops between pumps and manifolds
  • Well service – kill lines and circulating lines

FAQ

Swivel Joint Questions

Sizes, connections, pressure and service.

01What is a chiksan swivel joint?

“Chiksan” is a common name for a high-pressure swivel joint – a fitting with ball-bearing swivels that turn 360°. It lets temporary flowlines move and line up with pumps, manifolds and wellheads.

02What pressure are 1502 swivel joints rated for?

Swivel joints with Figure 1502 hammer union ends are used for working pressures up to 15,000 psi. Other figures are available for lower or higher pressure classes.

03What sizes do you supply?

We supply swivel joints in 2", 3" and 4" sizes, and 1" to 4" on request. The 2" size is the most common on frac and flowback lines.

04Do you supply hose loops?

Yes. We supply high-pressure hose loops built from swivel joints and pup joints, in 2", 3" and 4" sizes.

05Are your swivel joints available for sour service?

Yes. We supply swivel joints for standard service and for sour (H2S) gas service.

06What do I need to send for a quote?

Send the size, figure number, style or a simple sketch, end connections, service and quantity. Our Houston team will reply with pricing and availability.
